The Paços do Concelho is the former name of the building where the municipal administration of the Municipality of Amares was based. This building housed the Town Hall and other public services such as the Court, the Civil Registry, the Tax Office and the Prison.
Currently converted into the Francisco de Sá de Miranda Municipal Library, according to the Amares parish memoirs, it already existed in the 18th century and is located in Largo D. Gualdim Pais, in Amares.
It consists of three floors and, although it doesn’t have any great architectural wealth, it is a very imposing building in the context of the urban construction that surrounds it, a physical symbol of local power.
Amares Town Hall’s offices operated in this building until 1993, when they were transferred to the current premises. The Municipal Library has been operating in this building since 2012.
