Amares, between Homem and Cávado, is one of the 14 municipalities that make up the district of Braga. It is 14 km from the city of Braga and is made up of 16 parishes, covering an area of 83 km2. It is bordered by the municipalities of Braga, Vila Verde, Terras de Bouro, Póvoa de Lanhoso and Vieira do Minho.

With one of the most beautiful landscapes in Minho, it is reminiscent of Roman civilization when it crossed the Geira, which connected Braga to Astorga.

Associated with noble and illustrious knights such as D. Gualdim Pais and Mendo Moniz, it was the destination of the poet Sá de Miranda. More recently, its famous son was António Variações.

Amares is home to medieval manor houses and monasteries of the Benedictine and Cistercian Orders. With the soul of simple and hospitable people, enchanted by the whispering of the waters of the two rivers, it harvests from the land and brings to the table home-cooked cuisine, accompanied by the true nectar of one of the best vinho verdes and a juicy orange.

The Caldelas thermal springs, the Abadia, the mountain, the picnic areas, the landscape, the rurality and the leisure areas by the rivers invite you to a relaxing visit. You can hear the whispering of the waters that rip through the streams and once powered the mills, many of which have now been restored to their former state of disrepair.

Handicrafts, traditions, customs, festivals and pilgrimages provide the necessary attractions for an attentive visit.
